Still Life in Oils workshop – Duault, Côtes d’Armor, Brittany (Febraury 2018)
Participants spent the day in my garden studio developing their skills in still life painting. The workshop started with a number of timed warm-up activities, in order to fine-tune observational drawing skills and reinforce the importance of negative space/ellipses/creating depth through overlapping, before embarking on a small still life painting in oils. They were introduced to various artists’ work in this genre to get an understanding of different approaches to the subject and an historical perspective.Oil paint is a unique painting medium and very different to watercolour or acrylic. Demonstrations were given in the technique of colour mixing, and the layering of paint. During the course of the day, it was interesting to see the unique styles emerging. All produced excellent work and one participant worked further on their painting beyond the workshop, and sent me a photo of the finished piece at the end of the week (see main image). Thank you to everyone who took part. I thoroughly enjoyed working with you all and look forward to seeing you again in the future.
