From November 2017 – January 2018 I ran 3 workshops from my garden studio as a trial to gauge interest and obtain feedback from participants before launching on a wider scale. As portraiture is my fortè, this seemed to be the most obvious starting point. The initial sessions went very well, and I was able to obtain feedback and useful suggestions on how to improve both the courses and facilities.
Participants were introduced to portraiture through a series of timed drawing activities before embarking on a final portrait using either contè crayon or soft pastel. They were taught about the particular properties of soft pastels / contè crayon (blending techniques/layering colour/mark-making, etc….). Soft pastels can be quite difficult to control, especially for more detailed applications, and they can also vary widely depending on which make of pastel you use. Demonstrations were given in the different types of pastels and and which techniques to use for different drawing approaches. All participants, regardless of ability/experience, made very good progress, and the feedback I received was hugely encouraging. I am extremely grateful to all concerned for their enthusiasm on the day.
